The Sounds of Silent Films-in-Concert: Spite Marriage

Next date: Thursday, 12 September 2024 | 07:30 PM to 09:00 PM

Film still from Buster Keaton's Spite Marriage

Experience classic Buster Keaton and Laurel & Hardy films like never before – accompanied live by five-piece ensemble The Sounds of Silent.

The 1929 Buster Keaton classic, Spite Marriage, tells the story of Elmer, a humble dry-cleaning worker, and his idolisation of stage actress Tilby Drew.

Laurel & Hardy’s Liberty, a short action-physical comedy about two escaped convicts from 1929, will be screened prior to the main film.

Set within the surrounds of the charming Old Laverton School, this unique experience evokes the magic of a time gone by, when many bands performed in Melbourne theatres to accompany silent films.

Sounds of Silent is a five-piece jazz ensemble from Melbourne, featuring Martin Zakharov on saxophone, clarinet and flute; Jim McGuffie on trumpet, Ros Jones on trombone, Rod Wilson on keyboards, and Iliya Zakharov on drums and percussion.
